Alberta's 344 municipalities (19 cities, 106 towns, 80 villages, 51 summer villages, 6 specialized municipalities, 63 municipal districts, 7 improvement districts, and 3 special areas) as of July 2021

The 2025 Alberta municipal elections are scheduled to be held on 20 October 2025.[1]

Background

Nominations for the election will open January 1, 2025, and close on September 22, 2025.[2] The government of Alberta has tabled legislation to reform the municipal government system; the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, includes two pieces of legislation: the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) and the Municipal Government Act (MGA).[3] The proposed changes would enable municipal political parties but only as a "pilot project" in Calgary and Edmonton.[4] The Executive Council of Alberta would also have the power to remove councillors.[5]

Calgary

Incumbent Mayor Jyoti Gondek, elected in 2021, will seek re-election for a second term.[6]

Edmonton

Incumbent Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, elected in 2021, will not seek re-election.[11]
