As incumbent Lieutenant Governor Douglas Wilder chose to not seek re-election and instead ran successfully for 1989 Virginia gubernatorial election. Democratic nominee Don Beyer defeated Republican nominee Edwina P. Dalton with 54.14% of the vote.
