Water pillow (sleep product)

A water pillow is a type of pillow that contains a sealed water chamber, usually beneath a layer of fiber or foam fill, which allows the user to adjust firmness by adding or removing water. These pillows are designed to provide customizable support and are used by some individuals seeking relief from neck discomfort and sleep disturbances.[1]

History

The concept may have originated when a hot water bottle was placed under a pillow with the intent to ease neck pain during sleep, eventually being branded as a water pillow in 1995.[2]

Design and materials

A water pillow may consist of the following components:

  • A leak-resistant water chamber that allows for adjustable fill levels
  • A comfort layer made of polyester fiber, memory foam, or down alternative materials
  • An outer shell, usually composed of cotton or poly-cotton
  • Thermal reflector layer that reflects heat generated by head

Water pillows are designed to offer adjustable firmness and consistent support by using a sealed water chamber, which does not compress in the same way as foam or fiber.
