Umama Fatema (Bengali: উমামা ফাতেমা) is a Bangladeshi student activist who was served as the spokesperson for Students Against Discrimination. She was a key coordinator of protests during the July Revolution.[a]
Early life and education
Umama was born in Chittagong and attained her secondary education at the Ispahani Public School and College. She later enrolled at the University of Dhaka, and is currently pursuing a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.[2] She is a student of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall at Dhaka University.
Activism and Leadership
Fatema initially joined the Dhaka University branch of the Bangladesh Chhatra Federation. Subsequently, she became a central coordinator and later the spokesperson for the Students Against Discrimination movement, which played a major role in July Uprising.[13]
Notable Events
In early 2025, Fatema was reportedly selected to receive the Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award, a U.S.-sponsored recognition. However, she declined the award, citing concerns over the perception of foreign influence in domestic student movements. The decision drew both praise and criticism, with some viewing it as a statement on political autonomy.[14]
