Thiyam Suryamukhi Devi is an Indian classical dancer from Manipur, known for her contributions to the traditional art form of Manipuri dance.[1] She has been recognized for her extensive work in the preservation and promotion of this classical dance style, both as a performer and teacher.[2] She passed away on 29 June 2025.
Career
Suryamukhi Devi has played a vital role in promoting Manipuri classical dance across India and abroad. Over the years, she has trained numerous students and participated in major national and international cultural festivals. Her performances are known for their adherence to traditional forms and spiritual expression.[3][4]
Honours
In 2025, she was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, by the Government of India for her contributions to the arts.[5][6]
Following the announcement, she remarked that receiving the honour was a matter of "blessing and destiny," reflecting on her lifelong dedication to the dance form.[7][8]
