The Staffordshire Surge are an English American football team based in Stafford, Staffordshire. They compete in the BAFA National Leagues and were promoted to its NFC 1 Midlands division (Division 1) following a successful 2024 campaign.[2]

History

The club was established in January 1994 as a continuation of the former Stoke Spitfires, following disbandment in 1992. The founding membership included former Spitfires players and South Cheshire Refugees alumni, forming a registered member-led club.[1] They entered the British Senior League Division IV in their debut 1994 season, finishing with a perfect 10–0 record and reaching the semi-finals. Over subsequent years, the Surge continued to grow, winning multiple playoff berths and divisions. In 2024 they reached the Division 2 semi-finals and secured promotion to Division 1 for the 2025 season.[2]

League performance

The Surge currently compete in the NFC 1 Midlands division of the BAFANL, the second tier of British American football. In 2024 they finished with 7 wins and 3 losses, earning promotion.[2] Their regular-season matches are now held at Stafford Rugby Club.

Organisation and Community

Operated as a not-for-profit and community-focused club, the Surge run adult and youth programs. In 2024 they formed a strategic partnership with Stafford Rugby Club to access better training and match facilities.[2] The club introduced over 85 registered players and 17 coaches during the 2024 season.[2]

The team plays its home games and trains at Stafford Rugby Club on Blackberry Lane, Stafford ST16 2TT.[2]
