Sports School of Olympic Reserve for Water Sports "Ekran" — an Olympic reserve sports school — trains athletes in swimming, water polo, and diving. Founded in 1961 in Leningrad.[1]
History
The Saint Petersburg State Budgetary Institution "Sports School of Olympic Reserve for Water Sports 'Ekran'" has a history spanning more than 50 years. The school was established as a sports club in 1961.[1]
In 1967, a water testing facility was built at the Institute of Television, located on Shatelena Street. The director of the institute, I.A. Rosselevich, a great sports enthusiast, found a way to modify the project and adapt it for swimming. Hence the name of the school, "Ekran" (Screen), reflecting its connection to the television industry.[2]
The founder and senior coach of the "Ekran" children's sports school for swimming was Igor Mikhailovich Koshkin, Honored coach of the USSR, and his colleagues included Gleb Georgievich Petrov, Honored coach of the USSR, and Evgeny Ivanovich Gubenko, Honored coach of the USSR.
The director of the sports school from 1990 to 1995 was Vitaly Ilyich Matrokhin, and from 1995 to 2002, Evgeny Ivanovich Gubenko. From 2002, the institution was headed by Viktor Alexandrovich Kuznetsov, Honored Coach of the USSR.[1] Since November 16, 2021, the director of the Sports School "Ekran" (Saint Petersburg) is Alexey Kirillovich Maslennikov.[3]
