Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? franchise by David Briggs, Mike Whitehill, and Stephen Knight |
Show do Milhão was a Brazilian television game show that was created by Silvio Santos. The show, which shares some similarities to the format of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, featured a quiz competition in which contestants attempt to win a top prize of R$1,000,000 by answering a series of multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty. The program was presented by Silvio Santos and broadcast by SBT throughout its entire initial run from 7 November 1999 to 23 October 2003, during which it achieved major success. A revival of the program ran from July to September of 2009 before getting axed due to lower viewership figures.
As the first Brazilian game show to offer a top prize of R$1,000,000, the show contributed to SBT's highest ratings figures in its history; SBT was the second most-watched network in Brazil behind Rede Globo in the late 1990s and the early 2000s. However, the network began to lose viewers to Rede Record and Rede Bandeirantes near the end of the show's initial run, and would not regain second place until 2014.
History
The first season was advertised in September 1999 with a teaser campaign showing that "the 22 days are coming", without revealing further details. Silvio Santos, while in the United States in early September, told SBT executives in a phone call to air the promo. Days ahead of its premiere, it was announced that the program would premiere on November 7, 1999, and that the "22 days" were actually 22 episodes.[3] Beginning in the second season, the game show was renamed Show do Milhão.[4]
The game show gained a sponsorship agreement with Nestlé in 2002. The agreement changed the participative method, this time, on Nestlé's products instead of the Show do Milhão magazine, which ceased its circulation. The new season premiered on May 1, 2002.[5] In 2003, SBT announced a reformulation, which included a new set and elements of another game show, Sete e Meio, in order to save the game show.[6]

Twelve potential contestants were introduced by the host, who were assigned a number between 1 and 12. A number was then drawn from a box by the host, and the contestant wearing that number was called down to the stage from the gallery.
In the quiz competition, the goal was to answer 16 consecutive multiple-choice questions, all of increasing difficulty. The contestant was presented with the question and four possible answers, and must give the correct answer to the question before being allowed to continue. Answering the question correctly will earn the contestant the question's value, while answering incorrectly halved the contestant's total prize fund. During the game, the contestant was able to use a set of four ajudas (lifelines), of which three of them could be used only once:
- Cartas (Cards): 4 playing cards were presented face down to the contestant (one King, one Ace, one 2 and one 3). The contestant was allowed to flip only one card, which eliminates any of the wrong answers corresponding to the card that was revealed (selecting a King did not eliminate any wrong answers, while selecting a 3 automatically advanced the contestant to the next question).
- Convidados (Opinions): The host asked three university students the same question one at a time; each student could give a different answer to the same question.
- Placas (Poll): The host reread the question and the four possible answers to the contestants who were sitting in the gallery, who then must hold up a card corresponding to the number of a particular response; this is analogous to the Ask the Audience lifeline on the original version of Millionaire.
- Pula (Pass): The contestant was allowed to swap out the current question in exchange for a new one; this could be done up to three times in the game.
Contestants were allowed to stop and take the money after seeing every question. At the end of each game, the contestant in control chose the next player by drawing a number in the same procedure as at the start of the show.
The rules changed slightly for the R$1,000,000 question. The contestant in control was shown only the question and the four possible answers as before; he or she was not allowed to use any lifelines. Instead, the contestant was given 20 seconds to study the question before deciding whether to give an answer and risk all of the money or stop the game and leave with R$500,000. If the contestant answered the final question incorrectly, he or she lost all of their winnings.
The same rules for the original version were used in the 2009 revival, but the contestant had to answer 24 questions in order to win R$1,000,000 as opposed to 16.
Notable contestants
Sidiney Ferreira Moraes was the only contestant to answer the R$1,000,000 question correctly, having done so in October 2003.[7][8]
Cancelled children's version
On 9 February 2017, SBT announced that Show do Milhão would be revived as a children's game show with Patricia Abravanel as presenter.[9][10] The children's version was cancelled in August 2017 before airing a single episode due to Rede Globo's acquisition of an official Brazilian version of Millionaire.[11]
Revival
The game show was revived in 2021 as Show do Milhão PicPay, presented by Celso Portiolli.[12] Due to the sponsorship agreement with PicPay, users had to download the app and, if a transaction of over R$50 was made, the contestant would be eligible for participation, determined by Caixa Econômica Federal.[13] During the season, which aired between September and November 2021, transactions amassed R$2,4 million, divided among 312 eligible users.[14]
On June 18, 2024, SBT announced the return of Show do Milhão in 2025, set to be presented by Patrícia Abravanel.[15] Shortly after the death of Silvio Santos, it was announced that the revival would return earlier than expected, with the first episode airing on September 8, 2024.[16]
In January 2025, SBT announced a new season of Show do Milhão, hosted this time by Patrícia Abravanel, with a tentative premiere date scheduled for May 4, to try competing against Globo in the 11pm slot following the end of Big Brother Brasil 25. Scheduled to have thirteen programs, the ratings will determine if a third series of the revival is a viable option, which would air in the second half of 2025.[17]
