Sharon Gillen is a former Camogie player,[1] a Club Championship medalist and one of the stars of the '95 victory when she scored a goal and two as a substitute in their 4-09 to 1-5 win over Toomevara.

Club player

Her playing career that began in 1990 when she was only 15. She was a member of the 1992 and 1995 Provincial Club Championship winning teams, with the 1995 team going on to win the All Ireland final.[2]

She starred in the 1995 Club Camogie Championship final, a first All Ireland Club title for Rathnure Saint Anne's, despite taking a blow to the head that affected her accuracy and her ability to focus on long periods. Another outstanding performance was in the 1996 County Championship quarter-final.[3] She then retired from playing, saying farewell to camogie shortly, after 2001.

With her club Rathnure Saint Anne's she scored crucial goals in some of the 7 Co. Club Championship wins of 1994-5 and '98-02, 1-2 in the '95 and 1-4 in the '00 wins, another 1-5 in the '94 Co. Final win (on her debut on the big stage), a 2-1 haul in the '99 Co. Final[4] and a 1-9 haul in the '98 Co. Final.[5]

In a game in 2001 she was a sub goalkeeper after an injury when she dropped a ball into her own net and had to pick it out again.[6]

Club manager

She was set to be ratified as joint manager of Rathnure for the years '05-6,[7] at the time becoming one of only an estimated 19 females managing a senior Camogie club in her province. Local rumours said she was trying to assemble a strong backroom team by going with provincial club winner John O'Neill and former Minor title winner John Murphy as selectors.[8]

She was one of 11 nominees for club manager of the year after guiding Rathnure to back-to-back Co. league and championship titles when they let her begin managing.[9] but she resigned as manager immediately,[10] saying it was too tough.
