Rubina Bajwa is a Canadian actress known for her work in Punjabi cinema. She made her screen debut in 2017 with Sargi, directed by her elder sister Neeru Bajwa, and won Best Female Debut at the 2018 PTC Punjabi Film Awards.[1][2]

Early life and education

Bajwa was born in Vancouver to Jaswant and Surinder Bajwa, a Jatt Sikh family with strong ties to Punjab.[3] She has two sisters—Neeru Bajwa and Sabrina Bajwa—and a brother, Suhail.[4] Rubina completed her acting school at Anupam Kher’s Actor Prepares academy in Mumbai before entering films.[5]

Career

2017–2018: Debut and breakthrough

Bajwa’s debut release Sargi (24 February 2017) received encouraging notices; The Tribune praised her “pretty screen presence” and said she showed strong promise as a newcomer.[6]

That performance was later recognised with the Best Female Debut honour at the 2018 PTC Punjabi Film Awards.[7]

In 2018 she starred in the wedding comedy Laavaan Phere, a commercial success,[8] and made a cameo in the song “Mucch” in Aate Di Chidi.[9]

2019–2021: Versatility and critical notice

  • Laiye Je Yaarian (2019) featured her as Jaanpreet “Jaanu”; ETimes wrote she “will steal your heart.”[10]
  • In social satire Munda Hi Chahida (2019) she wore a prosthetic baby bump for the full shoot, which media highlighted as an example of her dedication.[11]
  • Additional 2019 releases included Gidarh Singhi[12] and Teri Meri Gal Ban Gayi (shot 2019; released 2022).[13]

In 2021 her rom-com Good Luck Jatta—opposite singer-actor Ninja—finally reached cinemas after pandemic delays.[14]

2022–present: Streaming era and dramatic roles

  • Beautiful Billo (ZEE5, 11 August 2022) reunited Rubina with Neeru; TOI called her performance “an assertive modern wife” and noted her growing confidence on screen.[15]
  • Teri Meri Gal Ban Gayi (2022) paired her with singer Akhil and director Priti Sapru.[13]
  • Buhe Bariyan (15 September 2023) cast her as Karmi, an oppressed villager; Indian Express found her performance “effective.”[16]

Personal life

Bajwa confirmed her relationship with tech entrepreneur Gurbaksh Chahal in December 2019.[17][18] They announced their engagement on 7 June 2022,[19] and married in a private Anand Karaj ceremony in Cabo San Lucas on 26 October 2022.[20] Their son, Gurbaksh “Veer” Singh Chahal Jr. was born on 15 November 2024,[21] news the couple shared on social media.[22]
