Romería is a 2025 drama film written and directed by Carla Simón. It stars newcomer Llúcia Garcia as Marina, an orphan young woman seeking the truth about her biological father past.

The film had its world premiere at the main competition of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2025, and will be theatrically released in Spain by Elastica Films on 5 September 2025.

Plot

Orphaned young woman Marina travels to Vigo to seek information about her biological father, who died from AIDS. She comes across her uncle and the rest of her family on her father's side, who are nonetheless reluctant to look back to the past due to shame because of Marina's biological parents' struggles with substance abuse.[1][2]

Cast

Production

Romería was partially inspired by Simón's own life and is a fictionalized retelling of the story of how her parents met and fell in love in Vigo, and the beginning of their addiction to drugs,[5] with teen protagonist Marina conforming a sort of alter ego of Simón.[6]

The film is an Elastica Films co-production with Ventall Cinema, Dos Soles Media, and Romería Vigo AIE. It also had funding from ICAA, ICEC, Xunta de Galicia, Eurimages, Creative Europe MEDIA, FFA, the Madrid regional administration, RTVE, Vodafone, Movistar Plus+, Netflix, 3Cat, ZDF/ARTE, and The Post Republic.[7] It boasted a budget of around 3.2 million.[8]

Filming began in Vigo in the northern hemisphere Summer of 2024.[1] The old centre of Vigo (and the Praza de Almeida), was used for a scene set during the 2004 Festas do Carmen.[9]

It is shot in Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and French.[10]

Release

Prior to the start of production, the film was tentatively planned to be released in 2025.[11] Selected in the competitive slate of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the film premiered on 21 May 2025 at the Grand Thèâtre Lumiére.[12] It is scheduled to be released theatrically in Spain by Elastica on 5 September 2025.[13] mk2 Films acquired international sales rights.[7]

Critical reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 86% of 14 critics' reviews are positive.[14] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 75 out of 100, based on 7 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[15]

Marc van de Klashorst of the International Cinephile Society rated the film 4½ out of 5 stars, assessing that "it is Simón's one move away from realism that turns Romería into her best film to date."[16]

Wendy Ide of ScreenDaily wrote that Simón demonstrates again a "rare gift for capturing the unpredictable, mercurial beast that is the family".[17]

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian rated Romería 4 out of 5 stars, billing it as a "distinctive, intelligent, sympathetic drama".[18]

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter determined the film to be "more visually beguiling than intimately involving".[19]

Manu Yáñez of Fotogramas rated Romería 4 out of 5 stars, pointing out that should the film be Simón's best is because of "the small miracles emerging from her impure approach to fiction".[4]
