Roberto Lopes Alves (born August 30, 1983) is a Portuguese-born American businessman and politician serving as the current mayor of the city of Danbury, Connecticut, since November 2023.[1] Alves has also served as chair of the Democratic Party of Connecticut since January 2025.

Personal life

Born in Portugal,[2] Alves immigrated to Danbury from Brazil when he was 5 with his Brazilian mother and Portuguese father. He graduated from Danbury Public Schools.[3]

Career

After obtaining citizenship in 2017, Alves ran for town council, but lost.[4] He ran again in 2019, and was elected to an at-large district. In 2021 he ran for mayor against Republican Dean Esposito, but lost.[5] He ran against Esposito again in 2023, and was elected as the first Latino mayor of the city of Danbury.[6] In 2024, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont endorsed Alves to become Connecticut Democratic Party Chair,[7] and was elected to this position unanimously.[8]

Personal life

He is married to his wife Robyn. They have two children.[9]
