Production
In January 2025, it was announced M. Night Shyamalan would write and direct a supernatural romantic thriller film based on an idea of his and Nicholas Sparks, who wrote an accompanying novel. Jake Gyllenhaal was cast in the lead role, and Warner Bros. Pictures acquired distribution rights.[2] Sparks' manager had tasked him with developing "an original story that you think will fit [Shyamalan's] audience and yours — and he's going to do the same thing." After sharing ideas at a first meeting, they decided to proceed with Shyamalan's story.[3][4] By May, Phoebe Dynevor and Ashley Walters joined the cast of the film, now titled Remain.[5][1][6] In July, additional cast members were revealed.[7]
Principal photography began on June 18, 2025, in the state of Rhode Island.[8][9] Locations included the Coffee Depot in Warren;[8][10] a ferry on Narragansett Bay (accessed via the Prudence Island Ferry dock in Bristol);[11][12] the closed Gray's General Store in the village of Adamsville (and other sites in the correlating town of Little Compton);[13][14] the downtown area and Washington Square (including the exterior of the Florence K. Murray Courthouse in Eisenhower Park) in Newport;[15][16] and a tavern in Chepachet, Glocester.[17] Filming is set to conclude on August 8.[18][19] Shyamalan's production company Blinding Edge Pictures paid a monthly fee of $10,000 to lease the historic Cranston Street Armory in Providence for seven months; the production moved into the armory, which it will use as a soundstage, on May 1 and will keep it available until the end of November for any necessary reshoots.[10][19]

Remain is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. on October 23, 2026.[6]
