The port serves the iron mine of Cerro Negro Norte[1] and receives iron ore concentrate (>66% Fe) from Planta Magnetita through a 120 km-long buried pipeline.[2] Planta Magnetita processes the tailings of the copper mine of Candelaria and some of the iron ore of Los Colorados.[2][3] The port is owned by Compañía Minera del Pacífico and begun shipping ore in 2008.[4]
