• 1872 – The Delaware and Raritan Canal, New Jersey Railroad and the Camden and Amboy Railroad, the first railroad built in New Jersey, are merged into the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company.
• 1874 – Construction begins on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad in Colorado.

• 1904 – New Haven Railroad reorganizes its subsidiary streetcar lines as the Consolidated Railway.
• 1907 – Northwestern Elevated Railroad, the predecessor of the modern Chicago 'L' Brown Line, opens for service between the Loop and Lincoln Square.
• 1937 – All heavyweight wood passenger cars used on the Super Chief are replaced with lightweight stainless steel cars.

• 2005 – Fire causes an estimated $30,000 in damages to a bridge on Union Pacific Railroad's Nogales Subdivision south of Tucson, Arizona. Investigators believe the cause to be arson.

• 1921 – Franklin Knight Lane, Interstate Commerce Commission commissioner 1905-1913, chairman of same in 1913, dies (b. 1864).
