- 1853 – The Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad in Ohio, a predecessor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, opens.[1]
- 1880 – Following the Crédit Mobilier of America scandal, Union Pacific Railroad is reorganized as Union Pacific Railway.
20th century
- 1902
- The "consolidated railroad station" in Lenox, Massachusetts is destroyed by fire; investigation shows the cause to be the overheated basement furnace.[2]
- The Thompson Tramway, a predecessor of the Connecticut Company, is renamed Worcester and Connecticut Eastern Railway.
- 1912 – The Utah Railway is incorporated to haul coal from the company's mines to Provo, Utah.
21st century
- 2005 – Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway introduces a new corporate logo that replaces the railroad's verbose name with BNSF Railway.
