19th century
- 1882 – The first train between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, delayed by poor trackwork on the Cincinnati Northern Railway, arrives in Dayton; it departed Cincinnati on January 9.
- 1883 – The second transcontinental railroad line in North America is completed as the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks from Los Angeles, meet the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway at the Pecos River. The golden spike is driven by Col. Tom Pierce, the GH&SA president, atop the Pecos River High Bridge.
20th century
- 1901 – France: tramway du Havre, inauguration of the line from gare du Havre to the pier via place Gambetta[1].
- 1957 – Operations of the Santa Fe Railroad's Super Chief and El Capitan passenger trains are combined during off-peak seasons.
21st century
- 2005
- General Motors announces that it has agreed to sell its Electro-Motive Division to a partnership led by Greenbriar Equity Group and Berkshire Partners.[2]
- Five cars of a CN freight train derail in Fort St. John, Manitoba (a suburb of Winnipeg), Canada; as one of the cars was carrying propane, the area is evacuated. The tank car remains upright and intact, so local residents are allowed to return fairly quickly.[3]
