• 1896 – Northern Pacific Railway opens its Union Station in Portland, Oregon.

• 1998 – A freight train passing through Yaoundé, Cameroon, collides with another freight; some tank cars carrying fuel oil are ruptured in the derailment. The oil is ignited by a lit cigarette causing a flash fire and an explosion when the flames reach the tank cars, killing 120 people. See: Yaoundé train explosion.

• 1854 – Job A. Edson, president of Kansas City Southern Railway 1905–1918 and 1920–1927, is born (d. 1928).
• 1897 – Robert R. Young, chairman of Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and New York Central Railroad, is born (d. 1958).

• 1934 – Vincent Raven, chief mechanical engineer of the North Eastern Railway from 1910 to 1922, dies (b. 1859).
