Introduction

A school is the educational institution (and, in the case of in-person learning, the building) designed to provide learning environments for the teaching of students, usually under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is sometimes compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools that can be built and operated by both government and private organization. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional terms section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught is commonly called a university college or university.

In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (elementary in the U.S.) and secondary (middle school in the U.S.) education. Kindergarten or preschool provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college, or seminary may be available after secondary school. There are forty-six medical schools in the United Kingdom where students can study for a medical degree. There are thirty-six medical schools in England, five in Scotland, three in Wales and two in Northern Ireland.

All but Warwick Medical School, Swansea Medical School and Ulster University offer undergraduate courses in medicine. The Bute Medical School (University of St Andrews) only offers an undergraduate pre-clinical course, with students proceeding to another medical school for clinical studies. Cambridge University offers both pre-clinical and clinical courses in medicine, students who study pre-clinical medicine at this university may move to another university for clinical studies. Stonyhurst College is an independent, Roman Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition located in rural Lancashire, England. Founded in 1593, Stonyhurst has a long-standing literary tradition. Former pupil Sir Arthur Conan Doyle modelled "Baskerville Hall" on Stonyhurst Hall, and named Sherlock Holmes' nemesis, Moriarty, after a fellow pupil. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote part of the Lord of the Rings in a classroom on the Upper Gallery during his stay at the College.

  • 1925 – In the Scopes Trial, the Criminal Court of Tennessee upholds the Bulter Act, which made it unlawful, in any state-funded educational establishment in Tennessee, "to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals." The case was a watershed in the creation-evolution controversy.

Charles Marvin Williams (April 20, 1917 – November 17, 2011) was an American finance professor at Harvard Business School. He was a recognized authority on commercial banking who taught his students using the case method.

Born in Romney, West Virginia in 1917, Williams earned his bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University and his master's degree from Harvard Business School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, joining the faculty of Harvard Business School in 1947 and becoming a tenured professor in 1956. He retired from the school's faculty in 1986, concluding a four-decade teaching career. (Full article...)
