- 1834 - Charles Darwin, during the second voyage of the HMS Beagle, spent the day at the summit of Cerro La Campana in Chile.
- 1836 - The HMS Beagle, carrying Charles Darwin on its second voyage, departed Bahia, Brazil to finally head home.
- 1909 - Earl Douglass of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History discovered a series of eight articulated Apatosaurus tail vertebrae in Utah, USA.
- 1978 - John Marwick died in Hastings, New Zealand.
