- 20 July 1943 - the world's first organized fashion week, New York Fashion Week (then called Press Week), is held to showcase the work of American designers.
- 5 July 1946 – The modern bikini is introduced, modelled by Micheline Bernardini and designed by French engineer Louis Réard, at Piscine Molitor, a public pool in Paris.
- 1988 - Anna Wintour becomes editor-in-chief of American Vogue, later leading it to become the most successful fashion magazine in the world.
