Lorcán Ua Tuathail, known in English as Laurence O'Toole and in French as Laurent d'Eu (1128 – 14 November 1180), was an Irish clergyman of the from the Gaelic nobility of Ireland. After becoming a monk of the Celtic Church at Glendalough and then the monastery's abbot, he became the first non-Scandinavian to become Archbishop of Dublin. Lorcán played a prominent role in the Irish Church Reform Movement of the 12th century and, during the Norman invasion of Ireland, he mediated between the Normans under Strongbow and Ascall mac Ragnaill, the last Hiberno-Norse King of Dublin, while covertly assisting the military cause of the latter. Upon meeting King Henry II of England, Archbishop O'Toole spoke so firmly in defense of the independence of the Church from control by the State that the King was terrified that O'Toole would become a second Thomas Becket. The King may have secretly ordered a subsequent but unsuccessful attempt on the Archbishop's life, while the latter was saying Mass at Becket's tomb in Canterbury Cathedral. O'Toole was canonised in 1225 by Pope Honorius III. (Full article...)
