Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo is a pesantren located in Lirboyo Village, Mojoroto District, Kediri City, East Java. It was founded in 1910 AD by KH Abdul Karim. This Islamic boarding school is strongly affiliated with the Nahdlatul Ulama Islamic organization and was established as a salaf-based pesantren, namely an Islamic boarding school that emphasizes the ability to read and study books written by salaf ulama generations and their students (kitab kuning).

his pesantren is one of the largest pesantrens in Indonesia and has been a center for Islamic studies since decades before Indonesian independence. Even in the events of independence, the Pesantren Lirboyo was always involved in the struggle by sending its students to the battlefield, such as the Battle of November 10 in Surabaya.[1][2]

Initially, the Pesantren Lirboyo only used a simple system like sorogan (the student reads the kitab in front of his teacher for correction) and bandongan (the teacher dictates the translation and provides the meanings of the kitab), but since 1925 AD, 15 years after the establishment of the pesantren, the Pesantren Lirboyo also adopted a classed education system (madrasah system) called Madrasah Hidayatul Mubtadi-ien which still exists today.[3]
