Pleistacantha ori is a species of crab found along the coasts of the western Indian Ocean to Eastern Africa, at depths of 238–480 m (781–1,575 ft). It resembles Pleistacantha moseleyi and Pleistacantha pungens.[1][2]
Description
It has a pyriform carapace measured as large as 146.0 mm (5.75 in) long (129.1 mm (5.08 in) excluding the rostrum) and 106.3 mm (4.19 in) wide. It has an inflated carapace that is covered by numerous small sharp spines being in similar sizes with the walking pair of legs being smaller than in carapace. It is the largest species of Pleistacantha.[2]
Etymology
Pleistacantha ori was named in honour of the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) in Durban, South Africa.[2]
