Palagi (lit. 'Always' in Tagalog) is a song by Filipino singer TJ Monterde. It was released as a digital pre-single for TJ Monterde's Sariling Mundo on July 6, 2023. The song was produced by TJ Monterde and Chino David. The duet version featuring KZ Tandingan was released on August 28, 2024. [1] "Palagi" is a pop track in which TJ wrote for his wife KZ Tandingan, expressing it as a reassurance song.[2]
It received overwhelming positive reviews, with most of them praising the lyrics and emotional impact. "Palagi" was nominated in the 9th Wish 107.5 Music Awards, and won.[3] The duet version, was also nominated and won at 6th VP Choice Awards. [4]
Background and release
After the release of his single "Plano", TJ released his next single, "Palagi" including his previous single on July 6, 2023.
In March 2024, TJ shared that "Palagi" was written as a heartfelt message of reassurance for his wife, KZ Tandingan, saying: "This song is a song of reassurance for KZ." TJ wrote a song without putting pressure on himself to produce a hit song. He decided to write without any pressure and let go of the pressure to surpass his other songs. He surprised his partner with a garden dinner and shared the story of a song he had written for her. He sang the song for the first time and reassured her that despite their ten-year relationship, he would never replace her smile.[2]
The following month, TJ confirmed that "Palagi" was included in his second full-length album, titled Sariling Mundo, which was released on April 25.[5]
Composition
"Palagi" is three minutes and thirty-eight seconds long, the song was produced by TJ Monterde [a] and Chino David of Hale and composed by TJ Monterde himself, while John Apura provided the guitar, and Albert Tamayo mixed the song.[6]
Other versions
On August 27, 2024, Monterde posted a teaser on Instagram announcing the re-release of his hit track “Palagi” featuring his wife, KZ Tandingan. This follows his prior release of “Palagi – Wedding Version” and his recent solo concert at the New Frontier Theater on August 21.[1]
A duet version titled “Palagi (TJxKZ Version)” was released the following day, featuring KZ Tandingan. The collaboration was timed to celebrate the couple’s fourth wedding anniversary.
According to Tandingan, she identifies the duet version as a challenge due to her and her husband's distinct musical styles.
Tandingan was initially hesitant about recording a duet with TJ due to the expectation of a new version of a well-loved song being at the same level or offering something new. However, after consulting with TJ, she clarified the idea. TJ informed Tandingan that she could only release a duet version of a song with him due to his always-present nature. Despite being fragile and forced to record the song, Tandingan took the challenge and discussed her ideas with him before finalizing the song. They discussed their thoughts and checked with each other.[7]
In an article from Inquirer.net, KZ expressed surprise at the song's success and expressed gratitude to those who consistently supported her.”[8]
