Nymphaea alba subsp. occidentalis is a subspecies of Nymphaea alba native to western and northern Europe.[1]
Description
Vegetative characteristics
Nymphaea alba subsp. occidentalis is an aquatic, rhizomatous, perennial plant.[2] The relatively small leaf[3] is 9–13 cm long.[4]
Generative characteristics
The relatively small,[2] 5–8(–12) cm wide flowers[4] do not open widely.[3][4][5] Stamens are absent towards the upper end of the ovary. The gynoecium consists of 8–15 carpels.[4]
Taxonomy
It was first described as Nymphaea alba var. occidentalis Ostenf. by Carl Hansen Ostenfeld in 1912. It was elevated to the rank of the subspecies Nymphaea alba subsp. occidentalis (Ostenf.) Hyl. published by Nils Hylander in 1945.[1] Some sources treat it as a synonym of Nymphaea alba,[6][7][8][9][10] but others accept it as a subspecies.[11][12][13][1][14][15] Within the subgenus Nymphaea subg. Nymphaea , it is placed in the section Nymphaea sect. Nymphaea.[7]
Etymology
The subspecific epithet occidentalis means western.[16]
Ecology
It occurs in small, nutrient poor aquatic habitats[4] in ponds,[3] marsh pools, small lakes,[12] and sheltered bays of larger lakes.[17]
Distribution
It is native to Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden.[1]
Conservation
It is very rare.[2] In Sweden, it is classified as vulnerable (VU).[18][12] In the United Kingdom, it is of national conservation concern.[19]
