Nándor János Dáni (2 July 1871 – 30 December 1948) was a Hungarian athlete. Domestically, he would represent multiple sports clubs in multiple sports such as athletics, cycling, and speed skating. During his career, he would set two national records in athletics, one in the 100 yards and 880 yards.

Later on, he would be selected to compete for Hungary at the 1896 Summer Olympics. He would be entered in four events but would only compete in one, the men's 800 metres. There, he would earn the silver medal with a time of 2:11.8, earning Hungary's first Olympic medal. Later on, he would become a member of the Hungarian Athletics Association and would become the chairman of a carbonic acid factory.

Biography

Nándor János Dáni was born on 2 July 1871 in Budapest, Austria-Hungary. Domestically, he would represent multiple sports clubs in multiple sports. He would represent MAC Budapest in athletics and cycling, Neptun Evezős Egyesület in rowing, and Budapesti Korcsolyázó Egylet in speed skating.[1]

He would set a Hungarian record in 1894 in the 100 yards with a time of 10.3 seconds and would remain unbroken for nine years. He would also run a Hungarian record-setting time of 2:05.5 in the 880 yards and it would last for fourteen years. Dáni would later be selected to compete for Hungary at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. There, he would be entered in the men's 100 metres, 400 metres, 1500 metres, and long jump, but would not compete in either of the four events. He would only compete in the men's 800 metres.[1]

He would compete in the heats on 6 April against three other competitors. There, he would place second with a time of 2:10.2 and would qualify for the finals. In the finals on 9 April, he would place second with a time of 2:11.8, placing behind Edwin Flack of Australia who had set an Olympic record in the distance.[2] His silver medal win would earn Hungary's first Olympic medal.[1]

After his career in sport, he would become a member of the Hungarian Athletics Association. He would also become the director and then chairman of a carbonic acid factory. Dáni later died on 30 December 1948 in Budapest.[1]
