Muzaffarpur Junction railway station ,[a] station code MFP, is an A1 category railway station in the Sonpur division of East Central Railway. Muzaffarpur Junction is located in Muzaffarpur city, in the Indian state of Bihar.[3]

Muzaffarpur Junction holds a pivotal place in the East Central Railway Zone of Indian Railways, serving as a major railway hub in North Bihar. The station offers extensive rail connectivity, with daily and weekly trains available to major cities, including: New Delhi, Patna, Secunderabad, Kolkata, Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Amritsar, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Howrah, Ujjain, Chennai, Howrah, Bhopal.

Redevelopment

Muzaffarpur Junction, the largest railway station in the Sonpur Division and North Bihar in terms of passenger footfall and coaching revenue, is undergoing a major ₹442.01 crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to transform it into a world-class facility featuring state-of-the-art architecture, spacious and modern amenities, an elevated road providing direct access to a 72-metre-wide air concourse on the second-floor air plaza, two FOBs connecting all platforms with comfortable waiting areas and retail shops, a 12,399 sqm main terminal building on the north side, arrival and departure terminals on the south side, and facilities such as energy-efficient systems, rainwater harvesting, a sewage treatment plant, multi-level parking, Wi-Fi, a food court, washrooms, drinking water, ATMs, and access control gates. .[4]

Passenger movement

Muzaffarpur Junction is among the top 100 booking stations of Indian Railways. The station emerged as the top performer in ticket sales through automatic ticket vending machines (ATVM) in the ECR zone of the Indian Railways in 2025.[8] According to the Ministry of Railways (India) report, the station achieved impressive revenue figures in the financial year 2023-2024:

  • Revenue earned: ₹275 crore
  • Rank: 42nd out of 100 stations in terms of revenue generation
  • Total passenger footfall: 73,20,590

Furthermore, from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, Muzaffarpur Junction generated:

  • Revenue: ₹307 crore
  • Total passenger footfall: 1,77,10,869[2][9]

Platforms

Muzaffarpur Junction is having eight platforms, interconnected by three foot overbridges and having Two Washing Pit Line. Four new platforms will be built under redevelopment project of Muzaffarpur Junction.

The platforms are utilized as follows:

  • Platform 1: Primarily used for halting trains arriving from Hajipur, Bapudham Motihari, and Sitamarhi.
  • Platforms 2 & 3: Reserved for high-priority trains halting at Muzaffarpur Junction, mainly from the Samastipur Junction side.
  • Platforms 4 & 5: Used for trains originating and terminating at Muzaffarpur Junction, as well as for halting special trains.
  • Platforms 6, 7, & 8: Dedicated to DEMU and MEMU trains bound for Hajipur, Sitamarhi, Narkatiaganj, and Raxaul.[10]

Background

In February 2012, the Indian Railways had planned to set up a railway station Development Corporation (RSDC) that would work on improving the major railway stations, including Muzaffarpur Junction, by building and improving passenger amenities.[11] Under the development scheme, major development works are going on Muzaffarpur Junction. Separate air conditioned waiting lounge, free WiFi facility, IRCTC food court and many facilities are going to be available on Muzaffarpur Junction at the end of 2018. To enhance the security of this station, a metal detector and baggage handling system will be installed soon.
