Meghan Kelley Douglas is an American former fashion model who rose to prominence in the early 1990s. She was a regular presence in top fashion magazines, including international editions of Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue. Douglas appeared in major campaigns for brands such as Cover Girl, Dolce & Gabbana, Finesse Shampoo, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Prada, and Versace. She is among the few models to have appeared on the covers of all "Big Four" leading international editions of Vogue: American, British, French, and Italian.

Early life

Douglas was born on January 28, 1970, in Alexandria, Virginia,[1] and raised in nearby Vienna.[2][3] As the daughter of a diplomat,[3] she spent her early childhood overseas before returning to the United States around age nine.[2] She attended James Madison High School in Vienna. During her teenage years, Douglas worked at a donut shop and answered phones at Bloomingdale's.[4][5]

Career

After being rejected by her first-choice college,[4][3] Douglas began her modeling career in 1988 as a finalist in Elite Model Management's Look of the Year contest.[6][7]

Early in her runway career, Douglas struggled with stage fright, which she gradually overcame as she gained confidence walking in front of large audiences.[2][3] As her career developed, she trained under runway coach J. Alexander.[8] Douglas prioritized health and fitness, preferring exercise over dieting to maintain her figure.[4]

In 1992, The New York Times profiled her as one of fashion's "supermodels-in-waiting," alongside Nadja Auermann and Eva Herzigova.[4] A year later, Newsweek named her one of modeling's rising "new superstars," citing a shift in the industry that included Kate Moss.[9] She reportedly earned $15,000 a day that year (equivalent to $33,000 in 2024).[3]

Douglas was known for her adaptability, frequently changing her look through hair color and styling. In 1995, following the advice of Steven Meisel, a shift to red hair helped raise her visibility,[10][11] and she was named "one of a hot new bunch of redheaded celebrities."[12] She was cited as one of the highest-paid runway models for New York Fashion Week, alongside Elle MacPherson and Naomi Campbell,[13] and was named by GQ as the "star attraction" of Paris Fashion Week.[14]

She appeared in the fashion documentary Unzipped,[15] and is referenced in Michael Gross's exposé Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women[16] and in Bret Easton Ellis's fashion satire Glamorama.[17]

Personal life

In 1993, Douglas married financier Liam Dalton.[18] The couple appeared in the August 1994 issue of American Vogue in an editorial titled "The Weekenders".[19] Their first child, Kelley Rain, was born in October 1995[20] and appeared with Douglas in fashion layouts including that December's Vogue.[21] Douglas has four children;[22][23] her two younger sons, Lander and Cade, are also working models.[24][25]

Douglas is of Irish descent and identifies as Catholic.[26]
