Early life

Md. Nazrul Islam was born on 5 June 1959 in Chandrakona of Sherpur Thana, Mymensingh District, East Pakistan, Pakistan to Md. Ansar Ali and Mosammat Rezia Khatun as their first child. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Dhaka in 1982 and enrolled for a master's degree the following year.[1]

Career

Islam joined the public administration cadre of the special Bangladesh Civil Service batch of 1984.[2] He served as the Upazila Executive Officer in Boda, Nabiganj, Bahubal, and Habiganj Sadar Upazila; Deputy Director of the Youth Development Department in Mymensingh; Chief Executive Officer of the District Council in Netrokona; Zonal Settlement Officer in Mymensingh; Director General of the National Academy for Primary Education; Chief Executive Officer of the Dhaka North City Corporation; and Administrator of the Dhaka South City Corporation.[3]

As an Additional Secretary, he served as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority. On 15 December 2016, he became a member of the Planning Commission as Acting Secretary and succeeded M.A.N. Siddique as the Secretary of the Road Transport Division on 12 October 2017.[2]

In November 2017, China Harbour Engineering Company attempted to bribe him with $100,000 hidden inside a tea packet. Following the directive of then-Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader, the bribe was returned to the Chinese Embassy.[4]

Although he was scheduled to retire on 4 June 2018, his tenure as Secretary of the Road Division was extended for two years on a contractual basis.[5] In 2020, his contract was extended for another two years.[6] On 21 May 2022, he was replaced by ABM Amin Ullah Nuri.[7]
