McGregor Street (Hong Kong)

McGregor Street (Chinese: 麥加力歌街) is a street in Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. The street starts from Queen's Road East near Wan Chai Gap Road in the south, passes by Hotel Indigo, Cactus Mansion, and Block 5 of The Avenue (囍滙), and is connected to the entrance of The Zenith (尚翹峰) Carpark on Tai Yuen Street in the north.

History

Over time, the street witnessed the changes of Wan Chai, it used to be a private street, also called "Iron Gate Street" (鐵閘街), the name came from the fact that Spring Garden Lane used to be a high-end residential area, during the financial crisis of the 1860s, many houses were deserted, leaving many demolished iron gates were moved here. Later, this street, which was originally a muddy field, was paved with concrete and became “Iron Gate New Street”, and was later renamed McGregor Street by the government.[1] On August 5, 2005, the Hong Kong Government's Lands Department reclaimed the street to allow the Urban Renewal Authority to carry out a redevelopment project.[2]

In order to facilitate the urban renewal project, the section of McGarry Street originally connecting to Cross Street was closed to all vehicles from 10am on May 13, 2011. Vehicles along McGregor Street will be diverted via a unnamed new road leading to Tai Yuen Street.[3] The unnamed new road is now part of McGregor Street.
