Mahara (surname)

Mahara or Mahra(महरा) is a Kshatriya (Rajput) surname in Uttarakhand, India, and a Chhetri surname in Nepal. In Kali Kumaon, the Mahra (Mahara) and Phartyals were the most prominent 'dharras' (धड़ा) in the recorded history of Kumaon. They have no relation to the Mahar community of other states in India.
