Louis Barral

Louis Barral (1910–1999) was a Monégasque lexicographer.

Biography

Louis Marius Barral was born on May 18, 1910, in Monaco at no. 4 rue Saige La Condamine.

In 1934, he made his debut at Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, becoming its curator.He took part in numerous Archaeological excavation. He publishes several works on prehistory and History. In April 1958, Louis Barral explores the interior of the Grotte du Vallonnet cave with René Pascal, following the chance discovery of the cave entrance by a child. In 1983, he co-authored a French-Monégasque dialect with Suzanne Simone. These works complement Louis Frolla Monegasque-French dictionary published in 1963.

He died on July 6, 1999 in Monaco.

Lexicographical writings

He was the joint author, with Suzanne Simone, of a French–Monégasque Dictionary (1983). This work complements Louis Frolla's Monégasque–French Dictionary (1963).

The dictionary and other works have contributed to a flourishing of literature in the Monégasque language.

Anthropological activities

Barral was the keeper of the Prehistoric Anthropology Museum of Monaco.

History

In April 1958, Louis Barral discovered the Cavern of Vallonnet along with René Pascal.
