A previous series of the same name, which ran for over 200 episodes on NBC between 1974 and 1983, was produced by his father, Ed Friendly. The series, commissioned by Netflix in January 2025, has Rebecca Sonnenshine as showrunner.[1] Production is expected to run between June and October in Winnipeg, Canada. The director is Sarah Adina Smith and executive producers are also Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Dana Fox and Susanna Fogel.[2]
Speaking in February 2025, actress Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls Wilder on the entire run of the earlier series, said she had no issue with the new adaptation and that there was "plenty of room" for "someone else's interpretation".[3]
