This list of tallest buildings in Rotterdam ranks buildings in Rotterdam, the Netherlands by height. Rotterdam, the second most populous city in the Netherlands, is home to over 350 completed high-rises.[3] The tallest building in Rotterdam is the Zalmhaven, with a height of 215 metres (705 ft).[4] The 59 storey skyscraper also stands as the highest building in the Netherlands and the Benelux.[5] It surpassed the former tallest building, Maastoren, which rises 165 metres (541 ft).[6]
Rotterdam is well known as the high-rise city of the Netherlands. The city is therefore often called "Manhattan at the Meuse",[7] because of the large number of skyscrapers standing close to the river Meuse, especially at Kop van Zuid. Rotterdam has a rich history in high-rises, dating back to 1897 with the completion of "Het Witte Huis". This office building was at that time the tallest skyscraper in Europe with a height of 43 metres (141 ft).[8] Rotterdam is famous for its characteristic skyline, and its world-wide reputation for innovative architecture. Over 30 new high-rise projects are being developed in the early 2020s.[3]
History
Rotterdam has a longer history with high-rises than most other European cities. The city's skyscraper tradition began in 1897 with the completion of Het Witte Huis (The White House), which was the tallest skyscraper in Europe at the time. The structure features a Chicago-type steel skeleton construction with a ceramic façade.
After the German bombing of Rotterdam in 1940 during WWII, the traditional city centre was largely destroyed. Unlike many other cities whose city centres were heavily damaged during the war, Rotterdam embraced the construction of modernist buildings. Despite this, not many high-rises were built between the 1950s and the 1980s. Starting from the 1990s, Rotterdam's skyline has steadily grown taller; a major milestone was the completion of the twin-tower Delftse Poort complex in 1992. Its status as Rotterdam's tallest building ended with the construction of Maastoren in 2009. Since the 2000s, new high-rises in the city have been increasingly residential buildings. The city's current tallest building, Zalmhaven, was built in 2020, and is the first building in the Netherlands to exceed 200 m (656 ft) in height. The proposed Rise tower, if built, would supplant Zalmhaven as the new tallest building in the city.
