The whaler Franklin, under Captain Cooper, went ashore approximately 70 nautical miles (130 km) north of Pernambuco, Brazil on her way home from the Pacific Ocean.[19]

The ship foundered in the Atlantic Ocean. Two of her crew were rescued, the remainder were reported missing. She was on a voyage from Agrigento, Sicily to Boston, Massachusetts.[20]
