Kim Seon-ho (Korean김선호, IPA: [kim ˈsʰɘ(ː)nβo̞]; born May 8, 1986) is a South Korean actor. He began his acting career on stage in 2009 and transitioned to television in 2017 with Good Manager. Kim gained widespread recognition for his role in Start-Up (2020). He further rose to prominence with Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021), leading to his selection as Gallup Korea's Television Actor of the Year. In 2023, Kim made his film debut in the titular role of the film The Childe, earning him multiple Best New Actor awards.

Early life and education

Kim Seon-ho was born in Seongbuk District, Seoul, South Korea on May 8th, 1986[2] and grew up as an only child in Bongcheon-dong, a neighborhood in Seoul.[3] He describes himself as introverted and insecure during his childhood and adolescence, attributing these conditions to a traumatic event: during a home robbery, his mother was stabbed, and Kim narrowly escaped by hiding under his bed.[4][5] He slowly overcame this trauma through acting after enrolling in an acting academy during his third year of high school.[6][7][8]

After finishing high school, Kim studied at the Seoul Institute of the Arts where he received a degree from the Department of Broadcasting and Entertainment.[6] During his studies, he joined his campus theater club Theatrical Art Research Society.[A] In the theater club, Kim started to act in plays such as My Town, The Seagull, and Chunpung's Wife.[3][9][10]

Kim went for his mandatory military enlistment in 2007 before making his debut as an actor.[11] He served as an assistant instructor at Nonsan Army Training Center and later switched to working as a public service worker. His time in the military broadened his worldview.[3][12]

In autumn of the same year, Kim was triple-cast in season 10 of Aligator Theater Company's Rooftop House Cat, winning the lead role of Lee Kyung-min after competing against 200 candidates. He was recast for seasons 11 and 12.[18] In 2015, he secured another title role in Purpose of Love.[19] Both open-run plays are popular romantic comedies in Daehangno, akin to Off-Broadway.[20][21]

The establishment of The Best Plays Inc. in 2007 was a result of the resounding success of The 1st Best Plays Festival in 2004. The festival, originally initiated by Dongsoong Art Center Theatre Company, signaled a paradigm shift for Korean theater by showcasing young directors and popular stars. The festival's goals include producing outstanding Korean plays as part of our repertoire, supporting new plays and playwrights, and introducing remarkable plays from around the world with the purpose of motivating and enriching the Korean theater industry.[83]
