Kartini Manoppo (19 March 1931 – 14 April 1990) was an Indonesian flight attendant and model. She was the model for a painting created by Basuki Abdullah titled Lady in Kebaya in 1959 that attracted President Sukarno, who married her the same year.

Early life

Manoppo was born on 19 March 1931 in Kotamobagu, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, as the daughter of Anto Cornelis Manoppo, a bureaucrat who served as the first Regent of Bolaang Mongondow Regency.[1][2][3]

Personal life

Marriage and children

Manoppo met President Sukarno in 1958 when he was on an airplane from Kemayoran Airport to Surabaya, East Java to attend the inauguration of a weaving factory where she was his flight attendant.[1][4][2][3] She later retired from flying and returned to her hometown in Mobago.[1][2]

In 1959, Basuki Abdullah held an exhibition that was attended by Sukarno.[1][3] At that time, Sukarno saw Abdullah's Lady in Kebaya and ordered the state secretary to send a letter to Garuda Indonesia.[1][2] The airline asked Manoppo to return to flying, and participate in the World Stewardess Festival in San Francisco representing Indonesia to which she agreed.[1][2][3] Before going to the festival, Sukarno proclaimed his love to her in his living room at Istana Negara.[1][4] Confused, she accepted, asking only to return from the festival first.[1][4]

After returning from the festival, Manoppo sent a letter to resign from Garuda Indonesia.[4] However, her proposal was declined and she was moved to Dolok Martimbang.[4] She then became a companion to Sukarno and gradually realized that she was stationed to become closer to him.[4] After four years working in Dolok Martimbang, Sukarno proposed to her.[4] They later married in 1959.[1][2] After their marriage, Manoppo retired and resided at Sabang Street in Central Jakarta.[4] The residence later was occupied by Jakarta Llyod airlines.[4] Chronically ill, she traveled to Germany for treatment and rest.[4] After two years abroad, Manoppo returned to Indonesia and lived at Panarukan Street Number 21 in Menteng, Central Jakarta.

In March 1967, Manoppo again traveled to Germany to avoid political conflict in Indonesia at that time.[1][4][2] Manoppo later gave birth to their only son, Totok Suryawan, on 17 July 1967 in Nuremberg.[1][2] However, Sukarno's health at that time prevented him from meeting with Manoppo and their son until his death on 21 June 1970.[1] Eight years later they returned to Indonesia on 21 June 1978 to attend the restoration of Sukarno's tomb in Blitar.[1]

Death

Manoppo died in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 14 April 1990 and was buried in Kotamobagu.[3]
