Kamitokoro Station (上所駅, Kamitokoro-eki) is a railway station on the Echigo Line in Chūō-ku, Niigata, Japan.[1] It is operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East).[2]
History
In February 2022, JR East and Niigata City agreed to build a station between Hakusan and Niigata on the Echigo Line.[3] On 19 April 2023, the Hokuriku-Shinetsu District Transport Bureau approved the planned establishment of the new station.[4]
The station name was finalised on 1 June 2023.[2] Construction started later that year,[5] to be completed after the end of 2024.[2] Kamitokoro Station actually opened on 15 March 2025.[6][7] The establishment was celebrated by the local residents as the first station establishment development in 4 years since the last case in Niigata prefecture of Echigo Oshiage Hisui Kaigan Station in 2021, in 20 years since the last case in Niigata city of Uchino-Nishigaoka Station in 2005, and in 83 years since the last case in (current) Chuo-ku of Keikin-mae Station (Niigata Kotsu Rail Line).
Timeline
- 2017: Kamitokoro school district community council gathered approximately seventeen thousand signatures from the local residents to request the city government for establishment of the new station.[8]
- 2018: The Niigata city government allocated a budget for the consideration of the new station establishment in the fiscal year 2018 budget.[9]
- 2022
- February 7: The basic agreement between the Niigata city government and JR East was established.[10] The end of fiscal 2024 was planned for the operational launch of the new station.[11]
- October: The Niigata city government chose the most popular three naming options. The proposal by the city was based on the public inputs by the students and residents in the region. Three candidates were, "Kamitokoro" (上所), "Tokorojima" (所島), "Minami High School Mae" (南高校前). The proposal was presented to JR East in December.[12][13]

Lines
Kamitokoro Station is served by the Echigo Line, and is located 1.6 kilometres from Hakusan and 1.5 kilometres from Niigata.[19] It is the west side of the Nishi-Kosenkyo overpass of the prefectural road 164, Hakusan station to Meike line.
The location of the tracks around this station was formerly shared by the industrial private lines for the Niigata Central Wholesale Market and the Nippon Light Metal plant until their discontinuation. The space was reused to make the Echigo line a double-track capacity. The additional space was repurposed for the west-bound track as a part of the grade separation improvements of the Echigo line.[20]
Station layout
The station has two opposed side platforms connected by an underpass.[1] The platforms are 125 metres long[3] and can accommodate trains that are at most six cars long.[7][3] In addition, elevators are installed.[3] It has a two-platform and two-track configuration. All local trains on the line stop at the station.[7] It was built to be an unstaffed station.[2][21]
