Jitendra Chaudhury (born 27 June 1958) is an Indian communist politician who is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and serving as the incumbent MLA from Sabroom. Previously, he had won the 2014 Indian general elections from the Tripura East (Lok Sabha constituency) before conceding defeat against Rebati Tripura of BJP in 2019.[2][3]
Jitendra Chaudhury is the current Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tripura State Committee.[4][5][6] At the 22nd Communist Party Congress in 2018, he was elected as a member of the central committee. He is the national Chairperson of Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch (AARM).[7]
Early life
Chaudhury was born on 27 June 1958 in South Tripura to a Tripuri family. His parents were Matahari Chaudhury and Hematara Chaudhury.[1] His father was also the Member of Tripura Legislative Assembly between 1978 and 1983.[8] He completed his higher secondary in 1980 from Umakanta Academy.[9]
Political career
In 1993, Chaudhury was elected from Manu ST constituency as CPI(M) candidate for Tripura Legislative Assembly election and he won the election. He was the Minister of Forest and Industry, Commerce, Sports from 1993 to 1998 in Dasarath Deb Ministry. He was also Minister of Forest and Industry, Commerce, Sports in Manik Sarkar Ministry from 1998 to 2014. In 2014 Indian general election he won from Tripura East (Lok Sabha constituency) and became Member of the 16th Lok Sabha from Tripura.[10][11] However, in the 2019 Indian general election, he lost to Rebati Tripura. In the 2023 Tripura election, he won from the constituency of Sabroom.
Member of Parliament
Chaudhury was Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha since 2014 to 2019 from Tripura East.[12][13] On 27 February 2016, he raised announcement in Kokborok language at the Agartala airport and Railway stations in Tripura.[14][15] Following this, announcements on flight-related information were made in Agartala airport,[16] the civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju informed to chaudhury about this matter through a letter.[17][18]
State secretary of CPI(M), Tripura
On 19 September 2021, Chaudhury was named as the state secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) – Tripura following the death of incumbent secretary Goutam Das, for an interim period until the party's next state conference.[19][20][21] In 2022, at the coneference of CPI(M), Tripura state committee he unanimously elected as the state secretary.[22][23][24][25]
Leader of Opposition, Tripura Legislative Assembly
Chaudhury was sworn as Leader of Opposition of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on 20 March 2024.[26][27][28][29] Following the joined of Tipra Motha Party to BJP led coalition government and resignation of his predecessor Animesh Debbarma of Tipra Motha Party, CPI(M) became the prime opposition in the assembly.[30][31][32]
Electoral history
Chaudhury was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly from Manu for five consecutive times and once elected as Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. Currently he is the MLA from Sabroom.[33]
