He competed for Singapore in the men's team event at the 2012 Summer Olympics.[2] At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he won the men's individual table tennis, beating teammate Gao Ning 4 - 0 in the final.[3] He was also part of the Singaporean men's team that won gold.[4] In the men's doubles, he and teammate Yang Zi missed out on the final and could only win bronze.[3]

In 2015, Zhang retired from table tennis after a recurring elbow injury.[5]
