Isaya Mwita Charles (born 28 February 1974) is a Tanzanian politician who served as the Mayor of Dar es Salaam from 2016 to 2020.[2]
Early life and education
Isaya Mwita Charles was born on 28 February 1974 in Tarime District, Mara, which was then part of the Musoma Region in Tanzania.
He obtained his Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) from Tarime Secondary School in 1997. From July 2005 to May 2007, he attended Al Haramain Secondary School, where he earned the Advanced Certificate in Secondary Education (ACSE). From October 2008 to June 2011, he earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy.
Before entering politics, he worked as an economist for the Temeke Municipal Council and ran a printing company in Kariakoo.[3]
Political career
Isaya Mwita Charles serves as the Lord Mayor of Dar es Salaam City Council and is a member of the CHADEMA party. He was elected as a councilor in 2015,[4] and officially elected Mayor of Dar es Salaam City Council on 22 March 2016.[5] He has stated that his priorities include reducing traffic congestion and expanding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)system.[2]
