The House Committee on Air Force is a standing committee of the House of Representatives in the National Assembly of Nigeria. It is tasked with legislative oversight of the Nigerian Air Force, including policy review, budgetary allocations, and performance evaluations.[1][2]
Mandate and jurisdiction
The committee's scope includes monitoring the Nigerian Air Force's operations, welfare systems, infrastructure, and procurement processes. It evaluates training programs and defense readiness, working closely with the Ministry of Defence to ensure accountability and compliance with national security policies.[2][1]
Under Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution of Nigeria, the National Assembly is empowered to conduct investigations into the conduct of any person, authority, ministry, or government department charged with the duty of executing or administering laws. The House Committee on Air Force exercises these powers in its oversight functions.[3][1]
Oversight activities
In 2024, the committee conducted an oversight inspection at the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja. During the visit, Chairman Kabiru Rurum reaffirmed the committee's commitment to legislative backing and transparency in Air Force affairs. Vice Chairman Rufus Ojuawo, a retired Air Vice Marshal, also emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration between the legislature and the armed forces.[1][4]
