Hari (Japanese sport)
Hari (ハーリー, 爬竜) is a traditional rowing festival held in Okinawa, Kyushu, and parts of the Amami Islands in Japan.
Overview
Hari is a traditional boat race held in regions such as Okinawa and Kyushu, Japan, where participants row Hari boats to pray for maritime safety and a bountiful harvest.
The style of Hari varies by region. In the largest event, the Naha Hari, large dragon boats adorned with dragon heads and tails are used. In other regions, decorated Sabani [1](traditional Okinawan wooden boats) are often employed. On Tokunoshima and Yoronjima
Traditionally, Hari is a sacred ritual held on the 4th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, following ancient customs. However, in recent years, many areas have adjusted the schedule to weekends, public holidays, or Golden Week to attract tourists, creating a more festive atmosphere.[2]
