Events
Berkin Elvan
On the 16 June 2013, Berkin Elvan was in an area where the Gezi Park protests unfolded near his home in Okmeydanı, Istanbul. That day his mother wanted to go out and buy bread, but Berkin said that the streets were too dangerous and because he was younger, he could run faster in case of an emergency. He was later hit on the head by a tear gas canister[8] thrown by the police officer Fatih Dalgalı. However, in another report sent to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that he was found to be carrying explosives when he was brought to the Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital. He fell into a coma and died 269 days later on March 11, 2014.[9] His funeral was held in Istanbul on March 12 and attended by thousands of people.[10] He was buried at the Feriköy Cemetery, Istanbul.[11]
Ali İsmail Korkmaz
Ali İsmail Korkmaz, a first-year student at Anadolu University, fled to the back streets due to the police intervention. He was first beaten by the police and then twice more by groups armed with sticks. He was unable to receive treatment immediately at the hospital and first medical attention was given after twenty hours.[12][13][14] He remained in a coma due to possible brain hemorrhage for thirty-eight days. He died on July 10, 2013.[15] There were protests due to his death and his statue was erected.[16]
Ethem Sarısülük
He was injured by a bullet to the head as a result of the gunfire opened by police officer Ahmet Şahbaz on June 1. Within a few days, all of his organs failed and he died at the end of the 14th day.[17] An investigation was carried out at the scene 7 days after the family filed a criminal complaint.[18][1]
Abdullah Cömert
He was shot in the head with a tear gas canister fired from a police vehicle called a 'scorpion' during the Gezi Park resistance in Hatay. Abdullah died on June 3.[4][1]
Mehmet Ayvalıtaş
He lost his life when a vehicle crashed into a crowd of protesters in the Ümraniye district of Istanbul, where the Gezi Park protests spread throughout the country. Mehmet, who lost his life on June 2, 2013, was only 19 years old.[4][1]
Ahmet Atakan
22-year-old Ahmet Atakan, who went out to support the METU protests in Hatay in September, lost his life after falling from a high place on the evening of September 9. According to allegations, Ahmet fell from where he was because of a tear gas canister fired by the police.[1][4]
Medeni Yıldırım
He lost his life as a result of gunfire opened by the gendarmerie during a protest at the police station in Lice on June 28. Medeni was 18 years old when he lost his life.[1][4]
Hasan Ferit Gedik
Hasan Ferit, who was among those who took to the streets against drug gangs in Gülsuyu, Istanbul on the evening of September 29, was shot to death in the head.[4]
