George, Hereditary Prince of Hanover
George William of Hanover (full name Georg Wilhelm Christian Albert Edward Alexander Friedrich Ernst Waldemar Adolf Prinz von Hannover (Gmunden, 28 October 1880 – Nackel, 20 May 1912) was a German prince who died in a car accident.[1]
Biography
He was the eldest son of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Hanover (1845–1923) and Princess Thyra of Denmark (1853–1933), the youngest daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark. George William was also a great-great-grandson of King George III of the United Kingdom. His father was titular King of Hanover since 1878, which had however been annexed by Prussia in 1866. As the eldest son, George was titular Crown-Prince of Hanover.
He lived in Austria and served as a captain in the 42nd Austrian Regiment.
The prince died in a car accident on 20 May 1912 in Näckel, Germany, when he was driving his car to Denmark to attend the funeral of his uncle, Frederick VIII of Denmark.[2][3]
He was buried in the family mausoleum of Cumberland Castle in Gmunden.[4]
George was succeeded as titular Crown-Prince of Hanover by his younger brother Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick.
