Floods in Burundi
Floods in Burundi occur primarily due to seasonal rainfall and climate patterns such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation.[1][2][3][4] According to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), over 200,000 people in Burundi were affected by floods between September 2023 and April 2024, resulting in displacement and damage to infrastructure.[5][6][7][8] Areas most affected include Bujumbura Rural, Gatumba, Rumonge, and regions near Lake Tanganyika.[9][10][11] In April 2024, the lake’s water level reached 777.04 meters, 36 centimeters below the highest level recorded in 1964.[12][13][14]
