Evolito Ltd
Evolito Ltd is a British aerospace company that develops axial-flux electric motors, motor controller units, and battery management systems for aviation. The company operates a 3,716-square-meter (40,000-square-foot) manufacturing and testing facility in Bicester, Oxfordshire.[1][2] Evolito states that its goal is to contribute to sustainable aviation through axial-flux electric propulsion, with a focus on advanced air mobility applications and hybrid adaptations of existing aircraft platforms.
History
Evolito was established in June 2021 when YASA Limited, a pioneer in axial-flux electric motor technology, was acquired by Mercedes-Benz. As part of the acquisition, YASA spun off its aerospace division into a separate entity, Evolito, with exclusive rights to develop the technology for aviation markets.
In November 2023, Evolito became the first UK company to receive a Design Organization Approval (DOA) from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for electric propulsion systems, a milestone for its engineering capabilities and regulatory compliance.
In 2022, it purchased Gloucestershire-based aerospace battery developer Electroflight.[3]
In February 2025, Evolito was selected to supply 32 of its D250 axial-flux motors for French airship startup Flying Whales’ LCA60T airship, with entry into service expected in 2028.[4]
Leadership and culture
Dr. Chris Harris, as co-founder and CEO, has built a strong leadership team from the established aerospace OEMs. Marc Holme, as CTO, oversees technical development. Matthew Farides is vice president of business development.
In 2025, Evolito was recognized by The Sunday Times 100 Tech 2025: Hardware as the UK's third-fastest-growing tech start-up company. Evolito has also been recognized for its workplace culture, listed in The Sunday Times Best Places to Work list in 2023. In 2024, engineers Katie Tidd and Natalia Narożańska were named among the Women's Engineering Society's Top 50 Engineers.[5]
Markets
Competitors include magniX, Rolls-Royce Electrical, and Joby Aviation. The global aircraft electric motor market, valued at $6.5 billion in 2022, is projected to grow to $14.5 billion by 2032. Evolito's focus on systems designed for high-rate manufacturing aligns with this trend, aiming to reduce costs and scale production for commercial operators.[6]
