Europe House Sarajevo is a multipurpose cultural and information center located in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was established by the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2023 as a space dedicated to promoting European values, providing information on the European Union's work in the region, and fostering public dialogue, particularly among youth.[1]
History
Europe House was officially opened in 2023 as the successor to the EU Info Centre. The center was envisioned as a new, modern platform for connecting the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina—especially the younger population—with the European Union. It also aims to support the country's path toward EU membership.[1]
Facilities and services
Europe House features a modern multimedia space that includes:
- A public library housing thousands of books by European authors, developed in partnership with the Sarajevo Library and the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Culture and Sport.[2]
- Multipurpose spaces for exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, and other cultural events.
- Information points offering verified and updated content on EU policies, institutions, programs, and the EU–BiH relationship.[1]
- Facilities for new media production and online communications.[3]
Programmes and activities
Europe House organizes and hosts numerous public events aimed at fostering civic engagement, critical thinking, and European integration.
As of early 2024, the center had hosted more than 220 events and welcomed over 23,000 visitors.[4]
Some notable programmes include:
- Dealing with the Past: A collaborative initiative with the Sarajevo Film Festival, bringing together youth from across the Western Balkans to address the legacy of conflict through dialogue, education, and art.[5]
- Europe House Talks: A public forum encouraging discussions between EU representatives and BiH citizens on key societal topics, including education, human rights, and democratic participation.[6]
Art and culture programmes
Europe House Sarajevo regularly hosts a diverse range of art and culture programmes designed to engage the public in dialogue on European values and contemporary issues through artistic expression. The center has collaborated with local and regional artists, institutions, and cultural organizations to organize exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and literary events.[7]
One of the central pillars of Europe House's programming is the integration of cultural diplomacy into public life. Visual art exhibitions often reflect on topics such as identity, European heritage, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. Many of these events are curated in partnership with European embassies, cultural institutes, and local civil society organizations.[8]
In addition, literature and music are promoted through regular poetry readings, author talks, and concerts featuring both local and European performers.[9] These initiatives aim to create space for intercultural exchange and community building among Sarajevo's diverse populations.[10]
