Dragoș Sprînceană (born April 8, 1979, in Constanța, Romania) is a Romanian-American businessman, political advisor, and informal diplomat. He gained public attention in the 2020s for his role as a special envoy between the Romanian government and the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump. A polarizing figure, he is known for his conservative views, controversial rhetoric, and transatlantic political connections.

Early life and education

Sprînceană was born in Constanța, Romania, on April 8, 1979. He studied at the Faculty of Financial Management and Accounting in Constanța.[1] In 2002, he emigrated to the United States, where he initially worked as a security guard while continuing his education and pursuing entrepreneurial ambitions.[2]

Career

After moving to the U.S., Sprînceană built a career in real estate, financial services, and international consulting, eventually establishing himself as a successful businessman in Florida. He became active in Romanian-American business and political networks, often advocating for stronger bilateral ties. He owns GoldCoast Logistic Group, comprising six companies with three car parks in Illinois, Arizona and Florida, but also offices in Europe, in Constanța, Baia Mare and Chișinău.[3]

In the late 2010s and early 2020s, he gained influence within Republican Party circles, especially in Palm Beach County, where he serves on the Executive Committee.[4]

Political involvement

Sprînceană became widely known in Romania after being appointed in 2025 by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu as a special envoy to the United States, although the role was unofficial and not affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[5] His task was to act as a liaison between the Romanian government and the Trump-aligned political circle in the U.S. Sprînceană later stated that he does not hold any official position and that he is "just a citizen trying to help Romania".[6]

Public image

Supporters portray Sprînceană as a self-made man and informal ambassador for the Romanian diaspora in the U.S. He is admired in conservative circles for his blunt rhetoric and outsider approach.

In Romania, however, his image is more controversial. Critics regard him as a "shadow diplomat" with non-transparent political influence.

Business ventures

Sprînceană’s business portfolio includes real estate, consultancy, and financial services in both the United States and Romania. He has organized economic forums aimed at fostering investment and business ties between the two countries.[7]

Political views

Sprînceană promotes conservative and nationalist policies in both Romania and the U.S. He supports Donald Trump's foreign policy and calls for a pragmatic, sovereignty-oriented Romanian diplomacy.[8]

He has publicly criticized pro-Ukrainian messaging from Romanian leaders, arguing the U.S. should "ignore" such positions in favor of realpolitik. He also referred to the EU as the "Soviet European Union", which triggered public backlash in Romania.[9]

In Romania, he has been associated with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and linked to business and political figures as well as alleged Masonic connections.[10]

Controversies

Sprînceană's unofficial diplomatic mission was criticized for lacking transparency. Opposition parties in Romania questioned his qualifications and accused the government of bypassing institutional protocols.[11]

In 2025, Sprînceană sparked controversy in Romania after stating the U.S. should "ignore Romania's pro-Ukrainian messages", leading to condemnation from several Romanian officials and public calls for his dismissal.[12]

Reports also alleged financial links between Sprînceană and PSD figures, including loans and joint ventures, fueling further scrutiny.[13]
